All application materials must be postmarked on or before May 1, 2021 and submitted in one envelope. In addition, applicants may have an oral interview (conference call) with the scholarship committee.
Region XI is proud to announce that the winner of the high school senior scholarship for 2020 is Savanna DeMott of Glasford, IL. She is a member of the Illinois Arabian Horse Association and the Central States Arabian Horse Club. Savanna began riding Arabian horses at a young age and has owned an Arabian, named “Cookie” for several years
Savanna has been extremely active as an Arabian Horse Association youth! She was elected the Region XI Youth Director in 2017 when she was only a freshman in high school. That same year she was awarded the Region XI youth Ambassador Buckle for her volunteerism at Region XI shows, AHA Youth Nationals, community involvement, and promoting the Arabian horse by taking Cookie to an assisted living facility to help brighten the seniors’ day. Savanna was reelected as the Region XI Youth director for 2018. In 2019, she was elected to the Vice Presidency of AHYA and continued her volunteering at the local, Regional, and National levels. In 2020, Savanna was elected to the top position and now serves as the AHYA president.
Savanna not only participates in equine activities. As a high school student she has participated in JOI Club and as a member of her school’s soccer team. This year as a senior, Savanna participated in the Cooperative Education program at her school taking classes for half day and working in the community for half the day. Savanna has also served her church as a nursery volunteer for several years.Savanna will continue her education this fall at Spoon River College in Canton, IL and will study Agribusiness and Spanish. Region XI is extremely lucky to have upcoming youth such as Savanna to carry our region and the Arabian Horse Association forward in the coming years. With such a bright future ahead, we wish Savanna all the luck possible in her future endeavors!
Region XI is proud to announce that the winner of the continuing education scholarship for 2020 is Zachary White of Woodstock, IL. He is a member of the Iowa Arabian Horse Association. Zachary has been riding basically all his life and began showing when he was very young.
Zachary has many accomplishments in the equine world. He accumulated 30 National Championships and 18 Reserve National Championships in his years at the Arabian Youth Nationals. He also has numerous National Show Horse Finals National Championships for all age divisions, walk-trot through the 14 – 17 age range. Zachary was also the youngest person inducted into the Arabian Professional and Amateur Horseman’s Association.
Zachary has not confined his activities to riding horses, however. While attending Woodstock North High School he served as a member of his school basketball team where he was voted Valley All Conference, County All Star, and Offensive Player of the Year as well as other honors. He also served his team as captain for 3 years. Zachary has also volunteered as a camp counselor at John White Stables’ summer camp and as a camp assistant at the Summer League Basketball Camp. In his college life he is a member of Sigma Alpha Lamba, a national leadership and honors organization.
Zachary will continue his education this fall as a sophomore in Business at University of Wisconsin-Whitewater and we wish him all the luck in future academic endeavors. Region XI is extremely lucky to have youth such as Zachary to influence our youth and to carry our region and the Arabian Horse Association forward in the coming years.
